< HOW TO PROTECT YOUR DATABASE WITH ACCESS STARTUP PROPERTIES >
Earlier this month, Microsoft posted a chapter from my book on
Access protection and security into the prestigious MSDN website. This chapter
details how you can manually and programmatically protect your database using
the Startup options. It also explains how to disable the bypass key and even the
not so well known workgroup security protection for these options. Whilst
protection of your database is one reason why you would need to read this
chapter, just as important is that startup options can make an Access database
less daunting for the users of your database. Anyway you can read the chapter at
MSDN by using the following link.

The Access Startup properties download file
Once you have read the article, you will probably want to experiment with
the download database. You can find the Access 2000/2002/2003 version by using
the following link but you will need to purchase a copy of
The Toolbox to retrieve the
download file.

How to easily change Access startup properties with the Workbench
In the latest version of the Workbench for Microsoft Access, you can now view
and change the startup properties of your database without even opening the
database. This option is particularly useful if you turn off the full menus and
the By-Pass key. In our operations, this already is proving to be a very useful
time saver and I imagine that it could also make a difference to your databases.

FEATURE ARTICLE - HOW TO CHANGE A BACKEND
DATABASE >
In this edition of Access Unlimited, I would like to draw you attention to an
article that Scott McManus and I wrote for the August edition of Smart Access.
In this article we show you how to setup an Access database that will change the
fields, relationships and properties of tables in a remote database. This
article is useful if you have to update the structures of more than one backend,
if those changes are complex and if you want to make sure that all the steps are
followed. Please note that the approach that we take requires a good working
knowledge of VBA, especially for issues such as relationships or field
properties.

< SECURITY TIP
>
On the side or back of most good laptops these days you will find a small oval
slot called a DEFCON security point. This little slot is designed for a padlock
cable that can then be secured to something that cannot be moved. So if you have
any worries about security in your home or office, purchase one of these cables
and make sure that the cable is attached before you head out to the shops.

< NEW ACCESS DATABASE RECOVERY SERVICE AT
vb123.Com >
Every now and
again our customers and even members of my team run into an Access
database that is corrupt. Our usual approach is to stubbornly try and fix
the database ourselves and generally we are good at doing this. Early in
May, 2005, when we were battling with a database, I concluded that we were
wasting too much time trying to fix our databases. After a lot of
research, we teamed up with one the best repair companies on the web to
bring you an automated repair service for your Access database. Please
bookmark the following page for when you need your database repaired.

< WRAPPING THIS EDITION UP >
I thought I would share this Q & A from a reader with you.
Hi Garry
I'd really appreciate your advice on the best way to protect my new packaged access application from piracy. Ie. Should I write my own anti-piracy code and protect it in my vba?
Ed “In the early stages of a software product, it is best to concentrate on protecting your code and design and maybe introduce a basic registration initiative. More importantly it is best to concentrate on testing your install setups and to work with your customers to make sure the software works. Sometimes you can spend too much time on these anti-piracy things and it just detracts from your software and your overall sales. Off course, once you are successful, then you will have the money to invest in a good solution. For more on the sort of approaches to take, see my book on Access database protection and security
So thanks for reading our popular newsletter. Feel free to make comments, copy the email to a friend or maybe even contribute to the next edition. And if you can, have a look at our software by using the Marketing section on the left hand side of this newsletter. If you really like this newsletter, why not purchase The Toolbox and you will get all the other newsletters and plenty more in a developer’s knowledge base tool with super searching facilities.
