Access Unlimited Returns Courtesy Of the FMS Email Product

If you had been watching your in-tray, you would have noticed that my newsletters have been few and far between lately. For that I apologize but fear not the content was being written at the usual pace, the issue lay with the newsletter provider having some business problems.

So here I am again but this time around I am using the FMS Total Access Emailer to deliver the newsletters to you. If you have seen any of these articles before, sorry about that, I will aim to get link and descriptions all the recent articles out to you soon. All the best to everyone.

  Get Ready For The Upturn

If you are in the unfortunate position of not having much paid work on in this global economic downturn, now is the time to upgrade your skills because if you are a skilled developer who can help people solve business problems, positive times will not be far away. So as it is likely that you are an Access practitioner, I suggest that the best way to improve your skills is to push into areas where Access provides a stepping stone. To me SQL Server is one of those areas and here is what you have to do.

Identify the database that you most proud off and convert it to run with a SQL Server backend.

Do not stop when things get hard, solve all the problems.

It would be best if you then started using that database in your day to day work

When that works, start converting the Access queries to Views, Pass Thru Queries and Stored Procedures

One thing you shouldn't do though is become 100% immersed in your unpaid projects because its always better to write software that people need. For this you will need to make sure that you attend conferences, participate in online forums and contact all the people that can help you get back into the thick of things. Good luck to you in your endeavours.

Office 14 in 2 versions (32 bit and 64 bit)

This post and many others are indicating that Office 14 might come in 2 flavours, 32 bit and 64 bit. Why is this important, well if you want to use more than 4 gigs of memory on a PC, you need a 64 bit operating system. If you have that operating system running an emulator to make Office 32 bit work, that is wasteful of resources.

  Repair Damaged Access Databases

vb123.com and everythingaccess.com offers an online repair system for Access databases. The system is setup so that your data is encrypted before it is transmitted and in most cases, you should be able to recover a corrupt database in less than 30 minutes elapsed time. Garry

Link Subforms to the Control rather than the Field

Luke Chung from FMS discusses this fine detail on how to setup subforms and master form link fields that I never thought about. Sounds like a useful thing to think about in busy systems.

Office 14 (the 2010 version) to Run On Win XP

Tony D'Ambra from Access Extra pointed out this post on Office 14 and Windows XP. Backward compatibility is good to know for all those companies who have stuck with Win XP.

If companies want to save money on not upgrading Windows, will everyone get a good chair and monitor instead, in my view that's money well spent.

2007 Attachments Converted to SQL Server

One of our readers asked, can your MUST SQL Server Upsizing tool convert attachments that are supported in Access 2007 to SQL Image blob fields?

The answer to that and the curly issue of MultiValue data fields in Access 2007 is discussed here.
