Hello Access and Office Professionals and anyone else who wants to listen

Should We Develop In Access 2010 ?

A question that I get asked occasionally by my developers is "Shall we develop for the client in Access 2010 even though they are using Access 2007?" The short answer is technically you could but the longer answer is you should develop in the system that the client is using. Remember the client is king and you need to experience what they are experiencing. Should that stop you using Access 2010, absolutely not. As a developer you need to be one step ahead of your client base. What I recommend you do is use Access 2010 for your internal systems like billing and customer details. That leaves you with wondering how to switch between 2010 and 2007. We use the workbench for this and a version to do this is in early test mode now. Email me if you want to try the early release using access at gr-fx dot com.

Enjoy the Newsletter.

Making the grade

Doug Steele looks at a common problem in database design: converting from one data classification schema to another. He then moves on to a related question: ensuring that there are no overlapping records in a list of ranges (for example, a list of scheduled events). This results in some thorny SQL, but the results can be used in a wide variety of circumstances.
